From the Matterhorn to the Engadin.
Zermatt and St. Moritz sit at the two ends of the Glacier Express line, and the train takes about eight hours between them. By car the same valleys are about 275 kilometres apart, about five hours of driving in summer, and the trip ends at your hotel door with the luggage still in the boot. It suits a holiday split between the two resorts, and in summer it doubles as a drive over the Furka, with a stop in Andermatt if you want one.
Zermatt is closed to cars, so the transfer starts at Täsch, one stop down the valley. You take the shuttle train with your luggage, and the chauffeur meets you at the Matterhorn Terminal with the name you chose for the welcome sign. At the other end there is no station to find: the car stops at your hotel or chalet in St. Moritz.
Five hours is a long time in a car, so the class counts: in First Class or a Van First Class the back seat is where you work, read or sleep. The route crosses high passes that close in winter, so the chauffeur chooses the way on the day, according to which roads are open.
Over the Furka, the Oberalp and the Julier.
In summer the road follows the Glacier Express for most of the way. It runs down the Matter valley to Visp, east along the Rhône through Brig and the Goms, and over the Furka Pass at 2,429 metres to Andermatt. The Oberalp Pass leads into the Surselva, past Disentis and Ilanz; after Thusis the Julier Pass climbs to the Upper Engadin and St. Moritz.
The Furka and Oberalp roads close for the winter. The car then crosses the Furka on the car train, driving on at Oberwald and off at Realp about 20 minutes later. The Oberalp has had no car train since 2023, so from Andermatt the winter route goes through the Gotthard road tunnel and the San Bernardino tunnel, or avoids the Furka altogether by the Simplon and a stretch of Italy. Either way the drive is longer than in summer.
The Julier is kept open all year, with the odd closure when snow is heavy. On those days one way into the Engadin is the Vereina car train from Klosters.

How long does the drive from Zermatt to St. Moritz take?
About five hours in summer for about 275 kilometres from Täsch, before any stops. In winter the car train on the Furka and the longer way round the closed Oberalp add time. The Glacier Express takes about eight hours between the two resorts.
Why does the transfer start in Täsch?
Because Zermatt is closed to cars. The shuttle train takes you one stop down the valley to Täsch, and the chauffeur meets you at the Matterhorn Terminal. Coming from St. Moritz, the car leaves you at the same terminal for the train up to Zermatt.
Are the passes open in winter?
The Furka and Oberalp roads are closed in winter, while the Julier is kept open all year. The car crosses the Furka by train between Oberwald and Realp and continues through the Gotthard and San Bernardino tunnels, or the route goes by the Simplon instead.
Do we cross a border?
Not on the summer route, which stays in Switzerland. The winter alternative by the Simplon runs through a stretch of Italy, so carry the documents required for your nationality.
Can we stop on the way?
Yes. Ask for it when you book, so the stop is part of the plan. Andermatt, where the Furka and Oberalp roads meet, is on the way and suits a lunch or a coffee. A detour or a longer stop can change the price.
Can the chauffeur stay with us in St. Moritz?
Yes, with the hourly service. It starts at two hours, with 20 km included for each hour; extra kilometres are charged separately and announced in advance. Stops are unlimited and the chauffeur waits at each one.
