Italy to the Matterhorn, over the Simplon.

Compared with Geneva and Zurich, Milan Malpensa has the shortest drive to Zermatt: about 190 kilometres to Täsch, around three hours, against about 230 from Geneva and 240 from Zurich. It suits long-haul arrivals into Northern Italy, and anyone who pairs a few days on the Italian lakes with a week in the mountains.

The chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, after customs, with a tablet showing your name, and the car is in the short-stay car park in front of the terminal. By public transport the same trip takes several trains, with the suitcases changing platforms each time. By car they stay in the boot until Täsch, while the road climbs from Lake Maggiore to the Simplon.

Zermatt is closed to cars, so the drive ends at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch, the last village in the Matter valley open to ordinary traffic. From there the shuttle train reaches Zermatt in about 12 minutes, or an electric taxi takes you up.

The trip can start somewhere other than the airport. From a hotel on Lake Maggiore or Lake Como, or from an address in Milan, the chauffeur collects you at the door and the quote is built the same way.

Up the Ossola valley and over the Simplon.

From Malpensa the motorway heads north towards Lake Maggiore and becomes the road up the Ossola valley to Domodossola. From there it climbs to the border at Gondo and, on the Swiss side, over the Simplon Pass at about 2,000 metres, then comes down over the Ganter bridge to Brig in the Rhone valley. A few kilometres west is Visp, where the road turns into the Matter valley for the last climb to Täsch.

The Simplon road is kept open all year, though heavy snow can close it for a while. Gondo is the only border on the trip.

For a winter crossing of the Simplon, book the SUV: Range Rover, Mercedes GLS, BMW X7 or similar, with all-wheel drive, five passengers and five bags. It is also the class for a family with ski bags. Out of season, a couple can travel in First Class, a Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 or Audi A8 or similar, with three seats and room for three bags.

Larger families and groups go by van. The Standard van (Ford Tourneo, Mercedes Vito or similar) takes seven people and seven bags; the Van First Class (Mercedes V-Class or similar) seats six, four of them around a table. The 12-seat van and the 14-seat minibus carry bigger groups.

How long is the drive from Malpensa to Täsch?

About three hours for about 190 kilometres, depending on traffic and weather. Add about 12 minutes on the shuttle train from Täsch to Zermatt.

Do we need passports for the border?

Bring the documents your nationality requires to enter Switzerland. The road crosses at Gondo, and Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so checks can happen there even within the Schengen area.

What happens if snow closes the Simplon Pass?

The chauffeur takes the long way round, through the Aosta Valley and the Great St Bernard Tunnel into the Valais, and the journey takes longer. The pass road is kept open all year, so this happens only after heavy snowfall.

Is Malpensa or Zurich better for Zermatt?

By road Malpensa is closer: about three hours to Täsch, against about three hours and three quarters from Zurich. The difference to plan for is the border at Gondo. Choose the airport with the better flight; the chauffeur meets you at either.

Can we stop at Lake Maggiore on the way?

Yes, ask for it in the quote. Stresa and the lake shore are close to the route. A stop that changes the distance or the time can change the price.

Can you take us back from Täsch to Malpensa?

Yes. You come down on the shuttle train and the chauffeur meets you at the Matterhorn Terminal at the time you booked, then drives you to the departures area of your terminal. Ask for both legs together in the quote.

Can I cancel the booking?

Are child seats available?

Yes, child seats and boosters are free. Add them in the second step of the booking and write the child's age and weight in the notes.
