Flying to Lugano, landing at Zurich.

Lugano is the largest city of Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton south of the Alps. It has its own airport at Agno, but that serves mostly private and business aviation, so on a scheduled flight from abroad you are more likely to land at Zurich or Milan. From Zurich the drive is about 220 km and never leaves Switzerland: no border on the way, and about two and three quarter hours when the Gotthard is running freely.

From the arrivals hall the next stop is your address in Lugano, whether that is a hotel on the lakefront or a house in the hills above the city. The train gets you as far as Lugano station, and from there it is still a taxi with the bags. With a chauffeur the luggage goes into the boot in the car park by the terminal and comes out at your door, so the only change of the day is from the plane to the car.

Someone else can book the transfer for you, and another person or a company can pay for it. Lucerne, the Gotthard, Monte Ceneri.

From the airport the motorway runs south past Lucerne to the Gotthard road tunnel, about 17 km under the mountain. On the southern side it follows the Ticino valley down to Bellinzona, climbs over Monte Ceneri and drops into Lugano. It is motorway almost all the way, and the whole trip stays in Switzerland.

The tunnel decides the timing. Queues build there on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and in Swiss and Italian holiday periods. When it is congested, the chauffeur takes the San Bernardino instead, via Chur, and rejoins the same motorway at Bellinzona. You are told before the change, and the price you approved stays the same.

The Standard Class, a Mercedes E-Class or similar, takes the same 3 and 3. A family with skis or large suitcases is better off in the SUV, with 5 seats, 5 bags and all-wheel drive for the Alps in winter.

A team travelling together can sit four face to face around the table of the Van First Class, 6 passengers and 6 bags. The Van Standard takes 7, and a 12-seat van or a 14-seat minibus covers a larger group.

Is there a border between Zurich and Lugano?

No. Both are in Switzerland, and the route stays inside the country from the airport to your door.

Is Malpensa closer to Lugano than Zurich?

Yes: about 65 km, around an hour by road, with the Italian-Swiss border on the way. If your flight lands at Milan Malpensa, book that transfer instead. From Zurich the drive is longer but stays inside Switzerland.

Do you also drive to Locarno, Ascona or elsewhere in Ticino?

Yes. For Locarno and Ascona the car leaves the motorway at Bellinzona instead of continuing over Monte Ceneri. Any address in Ticino can be priced in the quote.

How early should I leave Lugano for a flight from Zurich?

Count on about three hours to the terminal on a normal day, more on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and holiday weekends, then add your airline's check-in time. The chauffeur arrives at your address at least fifteen minutes before the pick-up time.
