From the 4 Vallées to a flight home.

Verbier sits at about 1,500 metres above the Val de Bagnes, in the 4 Vallées ski area, and Zurich Airport is across the country. By train the journey means Zurich Airport to Martigny, then a bus or a taxi up the valley, with every change made carrying ski bags. By car it runs from one door to the other: about 285 kilometres, about three and a half hours when the motorway is clear.

It is the transfer for the first and last day of a ski week, and for summer stays around the Verbier Festival. On arrival, the car climbs from Le Châble to the village and stops at your chalet door. On departure, it is at the chalet at least fifteen minutes before the time you booked, which leaves time to load skis and boot bags without rushing.

Three and a half hours is enough to sleep after an early flight or clear your inbox on the way home, and the Van First Class has a table for it. You can book the transfer for someone else, and another person or a company can pay. Companies with an authorised account can put the transfer on periodic invoicing instead of paying online.

Down the valley and across Switzerland.

From Verbier the road drops to Le Châble and on to Martigny. The A9 follows the Rhône to Lake Geneva, the A12 heads north past Bulle and Fribourg to Bern, and the A1 carries on to Zurich and the airport. There is no pass on the way and no border.

The slow points are at either end. The first kilometres from Verbier can be snowy in winter, and the A1 around Bern and on the approach to Zurich fills at rush hour. Ski-season weekends are the busiest days on the road.

With skis, and in winter, book the SUV (Range Rover, Mercedes GLS, BMW X7 or similar, 5 passengers and 5 bags): it has all-wheel drive for the road up from Le Châble. A family or a group of friends with ski bags fits the Van Standard (Ford Tourneo, Mercedes Vito or similar, 7 passengers and 7 bags), or the Van First Class (Mercedes V-Class or similar, 6 passengers and 6 bags), with four seats facing each other around a table.

For two people travelling light, First Class (Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7, Audi A8 or similar, 3 passengers and 3 bags) has screens in the back and tinted windows. Larger groups travel in the 12-seat van or the 14-seat minibus.

Neither. The whole route is in Switzerland, and from Martigny to Zurich it runs on motorways.

Is the road up to Verbier a problem in winter?
