Menaggio sits halfway up the western shore of Lake Como, where the road to Porlezza and Lake Lugano leaves the lake. Ferries from its pier cross to Bellagio and Varenna, but there is no railway station in town. Without a car, the trip to Malpensa takes a ferry to Varenna or the bus to Como, a train into Milan and another out to the airport: two and a half to four hours in all. By car it is about 85 kilometres and an hour and a half.
A car makes sense when the luggage is heavy or the flight leaves early. The chauffeur collects you at a lakefront hotel, a villa up in Loveno or the golf club on the hill above the town, and drives the whole way. Nobody carries a suitcase down to the pier or checks a train timetable at six in the morning, and children can sleep in the back instead of changing trains in Milan.
In the other direction, the transfer starts in the arrivals hall at Malpensa at the end of what may have been a long flight, and ends about an hour and a half later at your door in Menaggio, with the lake alongside for the last stretch. The length of the western shore.
There is one road south from Menaggio along the lake: the Regina, the SS340. It runs through Cadenabbia and the villages of the Tremezzina, past Argegno and Cernobbio, and reaches Como after the whole western shore, with the lake on your left for most of the way. This is the slow part of the trip: the road narrows through the villages and fills up on summer weekends.
Como is where the motorway starts. From there the car crosses the plain to Malpensa and drops you at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, depending on your airline, with no border to cross. Rush hour around Milan can slow this half of the trip.
