Most long-haul flights into Northern Italy land at Malpensa, and from there Portofino is a drive of about 220 kilometres, most of it on the motorway to Genoa and along the Riviera. With a chauffeur it is one car from the arrivals hall to your door, and the luggage is loaded once.
At the end of this drive there is often a hotel on the hill above the harbour, a yacht at the quay, a villa towards Paraggi or a wedding in Santa Margherita Ligure. After a night flight, nearly three hours in a quiet car are time to sleep or to catch up on the calls you missed. If you are staying in Rapallo or Santa Margherita Ligure, the road is the same and you arrive a little sooner.
The alternative is the Malpensa Express into Milan, a change onto a train for the coast, and then a taxi or a bus from Santa Margherita Ligure station for the final stretch, with the suitcases in your hands at every step. It works for a light traveller. It gets harder with children and a boot full of luggage.

The route and the timing.
From Malpensa the car takes the A8 towards Milan and the western ring road, then the A7, the Autostrada dei Giovi, south past Serravalle Scrivia to Genoa. Before the city it joins the A12 and follows the coast east to the Rapallo exit. From there the SP227 runs through Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure and Paraggi to Portofino.
That last stretch is the only road into Portofino, narrow and close to the sea, and busy in summer. The whole drive takes about 2¾ hours at free-flowing traffic, and on summer weekends the A12 and the coast road add time.

A family with summer luggage, or with golf bags declared at booking, fits the SUV: five seats and five bags. Groups of six or seven take a van, and in the Van First Class four seats face each other around a table.
For wedding guests there are the 12-seat van and the 14-seat minibus, and larger groups travel in two vehicles. For the couple getting married, the Rolls-Royce Ghost and the Maybach S-Class are available on request.

How long does the transfer take?
About 2¾ hours for about 220 km, at free-flowing traffic. On summer weekends the A12 and the coast road after Rapallo take longer, so leave a margin if a dinner or a boat is waiting.
Can the car drive into Portofino?
As far as the road goes. The Piazzetta and the harbour are on foot, and parking in the village is limited. Give us the exact address, the hotel or the berth, and the chauffeur stops as close as the road allows.
Do you also go to Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo?
Yes, both are on the way. Rapallo is the motorway exit, and Santa Margherita Ligure and Paraggi come next on the coast road. Enter the address when you book and the price is calculated for it.
Can we stop at the Serravalle Designer Outlet?
Yes. The outlet is next to the A7, which the route follows anyway. Ask for the stop in a quote request and the office replies with the full price.
When should I leave Portofino for my flight?
Count about 2¾ hours of driving back from the time you want to be at Malpensa, plus a margin for the coast road in summer. Give us the flight when you book and the office sets the pick-up time with you. The return can be requested together with the outward journey in the same quote.
I land on a private jet. Where does the chauffeur wait?
At the general aviation terminal, Malpensa Prime, or on the apron where the airport allows it. Give us the operator and the tail number at booking and the office arranges the access.
